Throughout June, we’ll be highlighting the men and boys whose stories, milestones, and presence continue to leave a mark on our family and community.

From the rich black soil of Southampton County,
Where fields stretched wide beneath Virginia skies,
Rose seven brothers whose roots ran deep—
Strong as oak trees, steady as the sunrise.
Bruce “Fats,” Royal “Tick,” Alex, James,
Willie “Skinny,” Wadell, and Burnett—
Names spoken with love across generations,
Names their families will never forget.
They were sons of the land and sons of faith,
Raised where farming was a way of life.
They learned early the value of hard work,
Of perseverance, sacrifice, and strife.
The fields of Capron knew their footsteps well.
The roads of Courtland knew their names.
Their hands helped build homes and communities,
While their hearts carried family flames.
They honored their parents with respect and care,
Loved their wives and children with devotion and pride.
Through every season, every challenge, every blessing,
The Barnes Brothers stood side by side.
Their voices rang through country churches,
Filling sanctuaries with songs of grace.
From Bryant Baptist to Mount Tabor’s pews,
God’s love could be heard in every place.
At Mars Hill and Galilee they lifted hymns,
With melodies born from faith and hope.
Their music traveled through Southampton County,
To Emporia and Greensville’s rolling slopes.
Some sang. Some played instruments.
Together they created joyful sounds.
And even now, years later, family and friends
Still cherish the memories that abound.
Their legacy lives far beyond the farm fields.
It lives in every child and grandchild’s dream.
In farmers and nurses, mechanics and teachers,
In every descendant who continues their stream.
Their influence marches through generations,
In service, sacrifice, leadership, and skill.
Some answered the call of military duty,
Serving our nation with courage and will.
Others became faithful public servants,
Working in state and federal roles with pride.
Quietly strengthening communities and institutions,
Following the values these brothers supplied.
It lives in truck drivers crossing highways,
In technicians solving problems each day.
In educators shaping young minds,
In builders helping communities find their way.
It lives in finance, medicine, government, labor,
Construction, business, and public trust too.
For the seeds these brothers planted long ago
Continue to grow and bear fruit anew.
Juneteenth reminds us of freedom’s journey,
Of sacrifice, courage, and dignity won.
Father’s Day reminds us of faithful men
Whose work on earth is never truly done.
Today we celebrate not only what they did,
But who they were at their very core:
Men of character, faith, family, and service,
Whose example still opens many a door.
Their legacy is not measured only by what they achieved,
But by the generations they inspired to serve.
In uniforms, classrooms, hospitals, offices, and churches,
Their descendants continue to honor the path they helped preserve.
For roots planted deep in love and faith
Cannot be erased by time’s demand.
The Barnes Brothers remain forever connected
To family, community, and this cherished land.
The winds that sweep across Southampton fields
Still whisper stories of days gone by.
And somewhere between the rows and rivers,
Their legacy continues to rise.
So today we honor these remarkable men,
With gratitude, respect, and enduring pride.
For though they have gone to their eternal reward,
Their roots remain in the rich soil of Virginia,
And their legacy will forever walk beside us.
