Throughout June, we’ll be highlighting the men and boys whose stories, milestones, and presence continue to leave a mark on our family and community.

Michael Claud, Joseph "Scotty" Barnes, Willie "Willie Boy" Westbrook, Zachary "Diary" Claud, and David Lee Claud are more than cousins. They are sons, fathers, brothers, nephews, friends, and proud descendants of a strong family legacy.

These men are the grandsons of our beloved Rhea Mae "Mommy Rhea" Barnes and Langston Barnes, whose love, guidance, and commitment to family helped shape generations. Their parents—connected through the families of Dotsie Claud, Lewis Barnes, and Wonza Westbrook—passed on values of hard work, faith, respect, perseverance, and love for family.

Their roots run deep in the communities of Capron and Courtland, Virginia, where the land, the farms, the churches, and the people helped define who they became. Through farming traditions and family connections, they share common ancestral roots and a heritage built on sacrifice, resilience, and community.

They have remained connected through the spiritual foundations established by generations before them. Their families worshipped and served through Bryant Baptist Church, Mars Hill Baptist Church, and Mount Tabor Baptist Church, institutions that helped nurture their faith and strengthen family bonds.

For many family members, one of the most cherished places was Mommy Rhea's house. It was more than a home—it was a gathering place filled with laughter, fellowship, storytelling, food, music, love, and unforgettable memories. It was where cousins became lifelong friends, where family traditions were preserved, and where connections were strengthened across generations.

As fathers, these men have contributed to the next generation. As brothers, they have shared lifelong bonds. As cousins, they have strengthened family ties. As sons and nephews, they have carried forward the values of those who came before them. Their lives continue to influence their sisters, children, nieces, nephews, cousins, church families, and communities.

On this special occasion, we also pause to lovingly remember Willie "Willie Boy" Westbrook and David Lee Claud, whose lives ended far too soon. Though their physical presence is missed, their memories remain alive in the hearts of family and friends.

The surviving family members continue to gather at reunions, church services, homecomings, celebrations, and special occasions. Through these gatherings, the spirit of family remains strong, reminding us that while generations change, the bonds of love endure.

As we celebrate both Father's Day and Juneteenth, we recognize these five men as representatives of a larger story—a story of freedom, perseverance, faith, family, and heritage.

Today, the Barnes Blow Family honors and celebrates these five cousins and friends.
