Honoring Henry Lee Battle Jr.

Throughout June, we’ll be highlighting the men and boys whose stories, milestones, and presence continue to leave a mark on our family and community.

Henry Lee Battle Jr.

Born into the rich heritage of Southampton County, Virginia, Henry Lee Battle Jr. answered the call to serve his country in the United States Army. Following basic training, he was stationed in Europe and rose to the rank of Sergeant (E-5). His journey from the fields and close-knit communities of Southampton County to Western Europe reflects the courage, discipline, and determination that have characterized his entire life.

After completing his military service, Henry built a distinguished civilian career as a crane operator with Union Camp Paper Company, later International Paper Company. Even after retiring in 2009, his strong work ethic led him to continue serving others for nearly another decade before fully retiring. His life demonstrates that meaningful work is not simply a job—it is a reflection of character.

Henry is the beloved eldest son of Henry Lee Battle Sr. and Mary Alice Barnes Battle. Through his mother, he is connected to the proud Barnes and Blow family heritage. His maternal grandparents were Langston Barnes and Rhea Mae Blow Barnes, affectionately known throughout the family as Mama Rhea.

Mama Rhea shared with her children and grandchildren the family tradition that they were part Native American, a heritage she carried with pride and passed forward through stories, identity, and family memory. Her home was a gathering place where generations learned the importance of family, respect, faith, and community.

One of Henry’s most cherished memories is spending Saturdays and Sundays at Mama Rhea’s home, playing baseball with cousins, walking the railroad tracks, visiting the Tasty Freeze called Shady Side, and enjoying the simple joys of family togetherness. These experiences helped shape the values that would guide him throughout his life.

Together with his devoted wife, Clara Hill Battle, Henry created a remarkable legacy of love and service. Their home became a refuge for children in need as they served as foster parents to dozens of young people.

They opened not only their doors but also their hearts. Many of those children grew into successful adults who continue to call them Mom and Dad. Their example reminds us that family is built not only by birth but also by love, commitment, sacrifice, and compassion.

Henry is known as a quiet, disciplined, honorable man whose actions speak louder than words. He enjoys fishing, gardening, growing flowers, and especially cultivating Charleston Gray watermelons.

Family and friends admire both the harvests from his garden and the fish he proudly brings home from a successful day on the water. He enjoys college basketball, cheering for the Dallas Cowboys, and spending precious time with family and friends.

The lessons he learned from his mother and elders continue to guide his life. His mother wisely taught him that “a person’s mouth can be their worst enemy,” while educators such as Principal Fred Nottingham reinforced the importance of treating women and girls with kindness, dignity, and respect.

Henry carried those lessons into adulthood, becoming a role model for younger generations.

The Barnes Blow Family also celebrates Henry’s leadership as a past Chairperson of the Barnes Blow Family Reunion Committee, where he helped strengthen family bonds and preserve family history.

Through his encouragement, wisdom, and steady example, he has inspired countless children, young adults, relatives, neighbors, church members, and friends.

As we gather for Father’s Day and Juneteenth Remembrance, we honor a man whose life reflects the very values both occasions represent: freedom, perseverance, responsibility, faith, service, family, and love.

Sergeant Henry Lee Battle Jr. stands as a testament to the strength of those who came before him and the generations he continues to influence.

May his legacy continue to inspire all who know him, and may future generations remember his example of faithful service to God, family, community, and country.

With love, respect, and gratitude,

The Barnes Blow Family

Reflection

The life of Sergeant Henry Lee Battle Jr. demonstrates that fatherhood extends far beyond biology.

Through his love, guidance, patience, and commitment to helping children grow into responsible adults, he has shown that the heart of a father is measured not by how many children share his name, but by how many lives are strengthened by his care.

Together, Henry and Clara Battle opened their home and hearts to children who needed safety, encouragement, and unconditional love.

Their example reflects God’s love in action and reminds us that every child deserves to know they are valued, protected, and cherished.

Legacy of Love

A Poem Honoring Sergeant Henry Lee Battle Jr.

Some men build houses of brick and stone,
Strong foundations carefully laid.
But Henry Battle built something greater—
A home where frightened hearts were not afraid.

He opened his door when others turned away,
Offering comfort, guidance, and care.
Children arrived carrying burdens unseen,
Yet found understanding waiting there.

With Clara beside him, steadfast and true,
He gave what every child deserves to know:
A safe place to rest, a hand to hold,
And room for hope and confidence to grow.

Not every child shared his family name,
Yet each one found a father’s embrace.
Through patience, wisdom, gentle correction,
He helped them discover their worth and place.

Years have passed and children have grown,
Building families and futures of their own.
Yet the seeds of kindness planted long ago
Continue to flourish and be shown.

The measure of a life is not wealth or fame,
Nor titles that history may record.
It is found in lives forever changed
Through simple acts of love outpoured.

So today we honor this quiet man,
Whose actions spoke louder than words could say.
A soldier, husband, gardener, mentor, and friend,
Who chose to serve others day after day.

His legacy lives in every child encouraged,
Every family strengthened, every dream restored.
For love given freely never disappears—
It grows, multiplies, and returns even more.

And generations yet unborn will feel
The blessings of the path he chose.
For the greatest harvest Henry cultivated
Was not in fields or gardens—
It was in the hearts of children he helped grow.
