Celebrating James Blow

Throughout June, we’ll be highlighting the men and boys whose stories, milestones, and presence continue to leave a mark on our family and community.

James Blow

Today we celebrate James McKinley Blow, born on June 19, 1956, on Artis Street in Franklin, Virginia. He is the son of James Luther Blow and Ellen Otelia Whitehead Blow, both of blessed memory. He shares his family heritage with his sister, Carolyn Blow Walker, and his late brother, Jason Blow.

What makes this tribute especially meaningful is that James was born on June 19th—Juneteenth, a date forever woven into the history of African Americans as a symbol of freedom, resilience, and hope. His life has become a living reflection of those values.

ROOTED IN FAMILY AND HERITAGE

The roots of the Blow family run deep in the rich soil of Courtland, Virginia, in Southampton County. Through generations, family stories have been shared and preserved, carrying forward a proud heritage of African American and Native American ancestry. While family members have spread across the nation, the connection to Southampton County remains strong—a reminder of where the journey began and the sacrifices of those who came before.

A DEVOTED HUSBAND AND LOVING FATHER

For 47 years, James has shared a remarkable marriage with his beloved wife, Avis Aungell Britt Blow. Together they built a home founded upon love, faith, commitment, and mutual respect.

Their union was blessed with two daughters:
• Shannon Alexis Blow Dominguez
• Brittany Alecia Blow Hurtado

As a husband and father, James has exemplified steadfast devotion, providing wisdom, guidance, protection, and unconditional love.

A CHAMPION OF EDUCATION

A graduate of Suffolk Public Schools, James completed high school in 1974 before continuing his educational journey at Norfolk State University.

He earned:
• Bachelor of Arts (BA) – Norfolk State University
• Master of Science in Education (MSE) – Old Dominion University
• Master of Science in Administration (MSA) – University of Phoenix

In addition, he earned numerous military awards, certifications, and advanced professional credentials throughout his career.

James not only pursued knowledge for himself but dedicated part of his life to educating others, helping young people develop the skills and confidence necessary to succeed.

A SOLDIER AND LEADER

Upon completing his studies at Norfolk State University, James accepted a commission as an Infantry Second Lieutenant in the United States Army.

For 13 years of active-duty service and 7 years in the inactive reserves, he proudly served his country, leading men and women both at home and abroad. He dedicated his career to defending the ideals and interests of the United States while demonstrating courage, discipline, integrity, and leadership.

A MAN OF FAITH

James and his family are devoted members of Eternal Life Church in Franklin, Virginia.

His faith has been a guiding force throughout every season of his life—as a son, husband, father, soldier, educator, mentor, and community leader.

SERVICE BEYOND SELF

As a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, one of the oldest historically Black fraternities in existence, James joins a brotherhood dedicated to scholarship, perseverance, uplift, and service.

His commitment to service also includes membership in the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge, an organization known for fostering personal growth, leadership development, mentorship, and community engagement.

A BROTHER, FRIEND, AND MENTOR

Beyond his many accomplishments, James is known for something even greater—his character. He is a loving brother, trusted friend, respected mentor, dependable family member, and a man whose presence brings people together.

A JUNETEENTH LEGACY

Born on Juneteenth, James McKinley Blow represents the progress made possible through the sacrifices of those who came before him. His life stands as evidence of what can be achieved through faith, education, perseverance, and service.

A FATHER’S DAY TRIBUTE

On this Father’s Day, we celebrate not only what James has accomplished, but who he is:

• A devoted husband
• A loving father
• A faithful Christian
• A proud veteran
• An educator
• A mentor
• A fraternity brother
• A Mason
• A community servant
• A descendant of a proud Southampton County heritage

James McKinley Blow’s legacy is not measured solely by degrees earned, military rank achieved, or organizations joined. His true legacy lives in the people he has loved, the lives he has influenced, and the values he continues to pass forward.

Happy Father’s Day and Happy Juneteenth, James McKinley Blow. Your life is a blessing, your service is appreciated, and your legacy endures.
