Celebrating Langston Barnes

Throughout June, we’ll be highlighting the men and boys whose stories, milestones, and presence continue to leave a mark on our family and community.

Langston Barnes

At forty five years old, Langston has built a life marked by dedication, kindness, family values, faith, and service to others. Following his studies at Atholton High School, in Columbia, MD, he completed a training program and began a career characterized by hard work and commitment. For more than twenty years, he has been a valued employee of Giant Foods, where he continues to contribute through his work in logistics, parcel pickup, and quality control.

He is a loving son, brother, uncle, cousin, neighbor, coworker, and friend. Family members know they can always count on him to remember birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions. His thoughtful phone calls, messages, and conversations help keep family bonds strong across generations.

Among his fondest memories are the summers he spent in The Yellow House in Courtland, Virginia, with his beloved grandparents, Lewis Barnes and Roxie Wynn Barnes. Today, younger generations continue those traditions of fellowship, food, fun, and family.

Langston proudly shares the oral family history of his African American and Native American roots in Virginia, which he learned from his family members, reminding others that the strength of the Barnes-Blow family was built upon deep agricultural roots, faith, perseverance, and community.

He has long cherished worshiping at Bryant Baptist Church in Courtland, Virginia, and Mars Hill Baptist Church in Capron, Virginia, where he attended services and vacation bible school alongside his beloved Grandma Roxie. Though she is no longer with us physically, her love and influence remain forever in our hearts.

Langston has also enjoyed spending time vacationing in Richmond, Virginia, creating treasured memories with his cousin Janay Barnes. Today we celebrate a man whose life reflects honesty, compassion, humility, and love—not only toward people but toward animals and all of God’s creation.

Langston is the great-grandson of Langston Barnes and Rhea Mae Barnes of Courtland, Virginia, and Clifton Powell and Dorothy Ferguson Powell of Suffolk, Virginia. He is the beloved brother of Denise Barnes and Rogers (Lee) Barnes, II.
