As we celebrate Father’s Day and Juneteenth in 2026, we pause to honor and remember a remarkable man whose life reflected the very values these occasions represent—faith, family, perseverance, love, service, and freedom of spirit.

Milton Leroy Gray of Rocky Mount, North Carolina was a man of quiet strength and unwavering character. He was many things to many people: a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, caring son, trusted brother, beloved uncle, respected cousin, faithful deacon, and loyal friend. Yet beyond every title, Milton was simply a good man.

Those who knew him were touched by his gentle nature, kind heart, and generous spirit. He believed that love was not merely spoken—it was demonstrated. Through his words, thoughts, and deeds, Milton consistently showed those around him how much they mattered. Whether offering encouragement, lending a helping hand, sharing wisdom, or simply being present, he made others feel valued and loved.

Milton found joy in life's simple blessings. He loved tending his garden, watching things grow through patience and care. In many ways, his life reflected the same principle. He nurtured relationships, cultivated friendships, strengthened family bonds, and sowed seeds of faith wherever he went. His presence enriched the lives of all who knew him.

His professional journey was equally admirable. From working in the diamond market in New York to dedicating decades of service at Sarah Lee Corporation in North Carolina, Milton exemplified diligence, commitment, and integrity. He approached every responsibility with pride and professionalism, earning the respect of colleagues and friends alike.

A faithful servant of God, Milton treasured fellowship with his church family at St James Missionary Baptist Church in Rocky Mount NC and fellow deacons. He regularly attended Sunday School, Bible study, and worked in the Food Pantry. His faith was not reserved for Sundays; it guided his everyday actions. He faithfully served on the usher board at church. He led not by demanding attention, but by setting an example of humility, compassion, and service. His compassion and show of kindness extended to his mother-in-law Roxie Barnes. They shared a loving mother and son relationship. After his retirement, he aided the children in providing care for his mother-in-law.

On this Father’s Day, we honor the loving father and grandfather who helped shape future generations through his example. On this Juneteenth, we celebrate a life that embodied the resilience, dignity, and enduring strength that have carried African American families forward through generations.

Milton’s legacy lives on in the values he passed down, the lives he touched, and the love he shared so freely. His memory remains a blessing and an inspiration to all who knew him.
