Honoring Steward Barnes

Throughout June, we’ll be highlighting the men and boys whose stories, milestones, and presence continue to leave a mark on our family and community.

Steward Barnes

Steward Barnes of Courtland, Virginia,
A son of Rhea Mae Blow Barnes and Langston,
A devoted husband to Annie Mae Blunt Barnes,
A loving father to Mildred, Shirley, and Joyce,
A grandfather, friend, neighbor, Mason, usher, and farmer,
A man whose life was rooted in faith, family, and the land.

Before the morning dew left the fields,
Steward was already awake,
Greeting each sunrise with gratitude,
Listening to the songs of birds,
And preparing for another day of honest work.
The earth knew his footsteps,
And the harvest answered his care.

His garden was a masterpiece of green abundance,
Rows of vegetables standing proud beneath the Virginia sun.
His collards grew broad and mighty,
Sought by family, friends, and neighbors alike,
Especially when the holidays drew near.
And his watermelons—legendary in Southampton County—
Were so large and sweet that they became the talk of the community.
One prize-winning melon earned him a ribbon at the county fair,
But those who knew him best knew
His greatest reward was seeing others enjoy the fruits of his labor.

Steward loved the outdoors with all his heart.
Fishing was more than a pastime—it was a calling.
Aboard his trusted boat,
He traveled the waters near Carey’s Bridge Road,
Casting lines with patience and skill.
Catfish, bluegill, crappie, sunfish, pike, and blackfish
Found their way into stories shared for years afterward.
He was an exceptional fisherman,
A man who understood both the river’s beauty
And the peace that came from sitting quietly upon the water.

When hunting season arrived,
He answered nature’s call once again,
Walking fields and woods with respect,
Appreciating every gift the Creator provided.
Gardening, fishing, hunting—
These were not simply hobbies to Steward;
They were expressions of who he was.

His smile could brighten a room,
His laughter could lift a burden,
And his sense of humor was unforgettable.
He loved joking with people,
Making friends feel welcome,
And reminding everyone that joy was one of life’s greatest blessings.

At Bryant Baptist Church,
Where he attended Church School as a child,
He faithfully served for many years as a Senior Usher.
He greeted worshippers with kindness and dignity,
Reflecting the faith that guided his life.
As a member of the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge,
He upheld principles of brotherhood, service, and integrity.

When summer arrived,
Steward often gathered family and neighbors
For trips to Sunset Lake Beach.
There was laughter, relaxation, fellowship, and fun,
Creating memories that still warm hearts today.
He understood that life’s greatest treasures
Were not possessions,
But the moments shared with those we love.

He enjoyed westerns, especially Gunsmoke,
And appreciated a good comedy that could bring a smile.
Yet perhaps his favorite show of all
Was the daily masterpiece painted by God:
The sunrise that began each morning,
And the sunset that closed each day.

A skilled farmer,
A talented builder,
A knowledgeable outdoorsman,
A devoted husband,
A loving father and grandfather,
A faithful churchman,
A respected Mason,
And a cherished friend.

Today we salute Steward Barnes
For a life well lived.
His legacy grows like the gardens he planted,
Flows like the rivers he fished,
And stands strong like the fields he cultivated.

Though seasons change and years pass,
The lessons of his life remain:
Work hard.
Love deeply.
Laugh often.
Serve faithfully.
And always take time
To appreciate the beauty of every sunrise
And every sunset.

Rest well, Steward Barnes.
Your harvest was abundant.
Your journey was honorable.
And your memory remains a blessing
To the Barnes Blow Family
And to all who had the privilege of knowing you.
