Honoring Zachary Thomas Claud

Throughout June, we’ll be highlighting the men and boys whose stories, milestones, and presence continue to leave a mark on our family and community.

Zachary Thomas Claud

Zachary is a devoted father, grandfather, son, cousin, and friend whose life reflects service, family values, perseverance, and pride in his heritage. He is the eldest son of Thomas Claud and Dotsie Mae Barnes Claud, and the beloved husband of the late Francine Harper Claud, with whom he built a loving and meaningful life.

He is the proud father of three children—Ashley, DZ, and Jordan—and shares a close bond with his siblings: Jan, Tracey, Michael, David Lee, Dotsie Mae, and Jackie.

A graduate of Southampton High School, Zachary later attended Norfolk State University, continuing a lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth.

A Mother’s Influence

One of the most important influences in Zachary’s life was his mother, Dotsie Mae Barnes Claud. They shared a special bond built on love, respect, and admiration.

She was a wise, caring, and devoted mother who instilled values that became guiding principles throughout his life. Among the lessons she taught him were: “Always do the best you can and treat people right.” Another message that remained close to her heart was the beloved gospel song, “May the Work I’ve Done Speak for Me.”

Growing Up on the Family Farm

Zachary treasures his memories of growing up on the family farm in Southampton County, Virginia. Life on the farm taught him hard work, responsibility, and appreciation for family heritage. As the grandson of Langston Barnes and Rhea Mae Barnes of Courtland, Virginia, he remains proud of the family’s agricultural legacy.

Service to His Country

Zachary joined the United States Air Force and served honorably for 20 years and 8 months, retiring as a Bomb Loading Supervisor and achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. His service included assignments in Alaska, Langley Air Force Base, and nearly a year in Saudi Arabia.

Continuing a Life of Service

Following military retirement, Zachary continued serving others through careers in security and corrections, including service at the Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center near Newport News, Virginia.

A Proud Country Boy

Zachary remains proud of his country roots. His favorite song, “Country Boy” by Alan Jackson, reflects his appreciation for family, faith, hard work, and rural living.

Celebrating a Legacy

On this Father’s Day and Juneteenth, the Barnes-Blow Family proudly celebrates Zachary Thomas Claud for his dedication to family, honorable military service, commitment to community, and enduring pride in his heritage.

May his story continue to inspire future generations to honor their family heritage, serve others with dignity, and live lives that reflect the wisdom of those who came before them.

“May the work he has done continue to speak for him.”

With Love and Appreciation,

The Barnes-Blow Family
